Nigeria E-Commerce Sales Analysis using Sunlight Detergent as a case study.

Nigeria E-Commerce Sales Analysis using Sunlight Detergent as a case study.

This 6 weeks journey of ours started on Monday 6th of June when we officially commenced the Side Hustle Bootcamp and were assigned into teams. Portfolio Data Analytics Team12 has a total of 10 Data Analysts who will be working on projects assigned to the team during the 6 weeks Bootcamp.

This week being the first week of the Bootcamp the project we were assigned to work on is to carry out analysis on any product in and used by Nigerians using both Power BI and Excel.

Here is what we have we been up to this week:

Our first task this week was to scrap data online which every member of the team got their hands on and we unanimously decided to use the Nigeria E-Commerce dataset scrapped from Kaggle.

Upon scrapping the data from Kaggle we cleaned the data on both Excel and Power BI.

Here is a step by step breakdown of how we carried out the data cleaning and visualization on Power BI:

We used the Get Data function on the home tab to import the dataset to Power BI

After which we load the data to Power Query Editor

On Power Query Editor we filtered out the product we decided to work on (Sunlight dataset) from the entire dataset , changed the column title and type to the most appropriate.

We noticed repetitions in the data e.g Sunlight Powder Destiny Pink 200kg and Sunlight Powder Destiny Powder - 200kg, we simply used the Replace value Function to replace Sunlight Powder Destiny Pink 200kg with Sunlight Powder Destiny Powder - 200kg.

The next thing we did was to load the data to Power BI using the Close and Apply function on the Home Tab where we adopted DAX measures like Sum, Average etc.

After using the DAX Measure to get the desired values, we visualized the data using charts seemed appropriate.

So here is how we cleaned and visualized the dataset on excel:

On Excel we formatted the sheet by removing the gridlines and adding color to the column header cells. We also changed the field type and name e.g changing the price from General to Currency.

Filled in the missing Order Regions according to the corresponding Order LGA. Replaced the values that were wrongly spelt to have unique and distinct values.

Cleaned the Product name column to ensure no value was repeated. The case was also changed to the proper case.

We then added a new page where we carried out analysis such as Sum, Average etc. After which another page was opened for the Pivot tables and another page where the pivot charts were combined.

Our supposed reasons the orders were cancelled and invalid include:

  1. Change in expected date of delivery.
  2. Delivered of product to a wrong address (Customer’s mistake).
  3. Product is no more needed.
  4. Cheaper alternatives available with same quality.
  5. Bad review from friends/relatives after ordering the product.
  6. Poor E-commerce platform for ordering product.

Here are our Recommendations

  1. Surveys should be carried out in Oyo and Ogun on the competitive products and comparisons should be made on the quality and prices of the product.
  2. Promotional packs, jingles and flyers should be adopted in states like Oyo and Ogun where little or no orders were recorded to further increase the awareness of the product.
  3. Discounting prices can also be adopted to foster the rate at which people order these products in Oyo and Ogun.
  4. Product images online must be of high quality and suitably taken from every possible angle. They must justify the product description and enable the buyer to understand it.
  5. Shipments process must be on time.
  6. Expected date and time of delivery of product should be displayed on the E-Commerce platform for buyers to see.
  7. Address and phone number of the buyers should be validated upon placement of order.
  8. Buyers should have post shipping information such as updates about the current location of the product via Email, text message or on the E-Commerce platform.
  9. Adequate update of their E-commerce platform for easy and hitch free of placement of orders by buyers.
